Sustainable Development Goals

Why we need adaptation

Our natural environment underpins all the sustainable development goals

The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has laid out 17 ambitious goals, which integrate economic, social and environmental dimensions. Underpinning those goals is the planetary resilience on which our social, health and economic wellbeing depends.

Our environment is rapidly changing. Climate change, land-use change, population growth and urbanisation are all impacting on our environment, the biodiversity it supports and the natural ecosystems on which we depend for the basic needs of life. While major targets are being set around the world to mitigate these changes, adaptation is an essential parallel process to enable populations to live and function in a changing environment.
